James Rubinstein My Personal Website

My Favorite Things

So here are a few of my favorite places on the 'net:

Make Magazine, chock full of DIY and mod-it-yourself goodness. They've also got a great blog (in which I've been featured).

Instructables.com, a do it yourself group of instructions for doing it yourself.

Lifehacker is a great website for finance, organization, and even software. It's all about getting things done.

A new addition to my favorite things:

Good magazine is chock full of...um...good things, like environmentalism, design, and social consciousness. The cover of their first issue has an AK-47 with the caption "can we make a design this good that doesn't kill people". It's a worthwhile question, since the AK-47 is good design with bad consequences.

Of course, I have to represent Anderson Independent-Mail and Anderson County

Some other favorite things:
Google. It's hard to imagine getting through the day without the "Big G". Now that I've moved totally to Gmail, it's getting even harder. They have word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations to boot. Those guys just don't quit. Oh, and that "search-engine-thing" is pretty handy, too.

Firefox a great browser and the epitome of open source software... which rocks, BTW.

Hack-a-day and Hackzine are also inspirational.

Audio geekery at diyaudio forums, the Abso!ute Sound, Audio Asylum, and Enjoy The Music

I love cooking (and eating ;) ) and some of my favorite sites : Good Eats, Allrecipes, America's Test Kitchen (publishers of Cook's Illustrated), and  King Arthur Flour (my favorite easily available)
Favorite cookbooks: The Bread Baker's Apprentice ,  The Joy of Cooking, and anything Cook's Illustrated does.

Recent economic events have had me thinking of Dan Arieli's book Predictably Irrational and Nassim Nicholas Taleb's book The Black Swan. Both have great insights into how the human mind works, and occasionally doesn't. Another favorite on my recent reading list is "The Conscience of a Liberal" by Paul Krugman. It must be good, the author just won a nobel prize!

Since I'm a car guy, I naturally have a few car magazines in the 'faves' list. SportCompactCar, Grassroots Motorsports 0-60, and Hot VWs

For the patently ridiculous amusement, it's The Onion, Woot, or Lolcats. I know, I know, but it's a guilty pleasure. :)
