  View Printable Version
Linux GamesThis Thursday, March 16th, we'll have another CLUG meeting. This time Ross Squires will do a presentation on Linux Gaming. We'll be in our usual room, McAdams 119, and the meeting will start at 8 PM as usual.

Gaming on Linux is still sort of a new thing, but there are already a lot of great games that you can play on a Linux computer without much trouble. Ross will go over many gaming-related topics, from what kind of system you need to game with, to how to set up Linux games. He'll mention some of the more popular native OSS games, free games, and Windows-based games that work under Cedega. If you want to learn more about gaming on Linux, this is you chance!

Pizza will be served to those who attend.

Quake ]|[ Arena Source Code Released

  View Printable Version
Linux GamesThe fine people at id Software have just released the source code to their excellent multiplayer deathmatch game Quake 3. The art, music and other game data remains closed and one must purchase the game to get a copy of it. The code is licensed under the GPL, and you can now expect to see it ported to many different platforms, and several small projects crop up to add feature x, y or z to the game. On Icculus.org, home of Ryan Gordon, famous for his work on porting several Windows games to Linux, there is an announcement that the icculus.org team will work on a straightforward bugfix oriented update to the game.

Nexuiz

Linux GamesDespite my trouble pronouncing its name, this unique first person shooter has earned my loyalty as a regular on its servers. Nexuiz is a fully open source game with plenty of levels and models. The engine is based on the Darkplaces engine, which as I understand is a derivative of the Quake code. This game has little graphically in common with quake, but features fast-paced gameplay, cross platform compatibility, easy configuration through mouse-driven menus, plenty of available servers on the internet and just in general a whole lot of fun.

Visit nexuiz.com for more info.

UMark for Linux

  View Printable Version
Linux GamesThe Unreal benchmarking utility UMark has just released a beta version of its Linux client which now has most of the features of the Windows version. This is a great way to compare the way UT2004 runs in Windows versus how it runs in Linux, as well as generally benchmark the gaming performance of your Linux machine.
